Finlay Fraser

My training began as a piano tuner and restorer under the tutelage of John Paul Williams and Samantha Hewson at the former London College of Furniture. I was in the final year of graduates before the course was unfortunately closed for good.

During my final year of studies I worked at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, helping to maintain the tuning of the conservatoire's many pianos under the supervision of former Bosendorfer concert technician Malcolm McKeand.

After graduating with a 1st class degree with honours, I accepted a role at Jaques Samuel Pianos in London as a tuner and technician.  further training followed in the form of  a 5 year concert technician course which included periods of training at the Kawai factory in Hamamatsu, Japan, the Grotrian & Steinweg factory in Braunschweig, Germany and ultimately one of the world's leading manufacturers of concert grand pianos, the Fazioli factory in Sacile near Venice, Italy.

During the 5 years of concert training under Bruno Torrens, Fazioli and Yamaha concert technician, I was given increasing responsibilities as a concert tuner, preparing pianos for performances and recordings throughout the UK and in particular London (Wigmore Hall, the Barbican, Royal Festival Hall, Milton Court, Cadogan Hall, Abbey Road etc) for artists such as Angela Hewitt, Daniil Trifonov, and Herbie Hancock.

After achieveing full membership to the Pianoforte Tuners Association in 2014 I was invited to become a membership test examiner.

In 2015 I began to undertake servicing and tuning work in Kent with the aim of establishing a complete piano service throughout the county.

I was responsible for the preparation and tuning of the Fazioli concert grand piano that was available for selection at the Scottish International Piano Competition in 2014 and 2017. In 2017, my piano was chosen by all three of the finalists over the Steinway and Bosendorfer also on offer.

I also enjoy a close relationship with C. Bechstein, whose concert grands are housed at Jaques Samuel pianos, where I service them in preparation for concerts in venues throughout the UK, including Wigmore Hall.

I am currently the concert technician at the Purcell School of Music.
